Historical Note

The McDonnell F-101 Voodoo emerged from a 1946 USAF requirement for a long-range strategic escort fighter. First flown on September 29, 1954, it became the first operational USAF aircraft to exceed Mach 1.5 in level flight and set a world speed record of 1,207.6 mph (Mach 1.84) on December 12, 1957.

The Voodoo served in three distinct roles. As the F-101A/C, it was a nuclear-capable fighter-bomber assigned to Strategic Air Command and later Tactical Air Command. As the RF-101A/C/G/H, it became the USAF’s primary strategic reconnaissance aircraft — RF-101s flew the critical post-Cuban Missile Crisis overflights in October 1962 confirming Soviet missile withdrawal, one of the most historically significant reconnaissance missions of the Cold War. As the F-101B/F, it served as a two-seat all-weather interceptor with Air Defense Command, armed with AIR-2 Genie nuclear rockets and AIM-4 Falcon missiles. Canada operated the CF-101 as its primary interceptor from 1961 to 1984 under NORAD.

A total of 807 Voodoos were built between 1954 and 1961, all powered by two Pratt & Whitney J57 turbojets.
