In 1934, Lockheed changed the course of commercial aviation with a single design decision: build small, build fast, build all-metal. The Model 10 Electra was the result — a twin-engine, low-wing monoplane that made the fabric-and-wire biplanes of the previous decade look like relics overnight. The Model 12 Electra Junior followed as a scaled-down executive and military variant, faster and more agile, adopted by air forces on both sides of the Atlantic before the war began. This collection brings together eight original factory and military documents covering the full family: L-10, L-12, C-40, C-40A, and C-40B — from the drawing boards of Kelly Johnson to the flight lines of the USAAF.

1. Aerodynamic Development & Design History
- Wind Tunnel Origins: Early scale models tested at the University of Michigan initially featured a single vertical stabilizer — and failed directional stability tests.
- Kelly Johnson's Twin-Tail Solution: Engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson identified serious directional instability and redesigned the empennage into the twin-fin and rudder configuration that became Lockheed's iconic design signature.
- Drag Reduction: Wing-to-fuselage fillets were removed and the forward-raked windshield modified to achieve a clean, unbraced cantilever wing — a significant aerodynamic advance for its era.
- Historic Engineering Reference: The Kelly Johnson and W. C. Nelson 1936 Aerodynamic Report (Lockheed Report 487) remains in use today to model the long-range flight dynamics of Amelia Earhart's modified Model 10E.
2. Engine Technical Notes
- Powerplants: Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior — 9-cylinder, air-cooled, supercharged radial engines producing 400–450 hp at 2,300 rpm for takeoff.

- Centre of Gravity Sensitivity: The main wing spar passes directly through the cabin floor on the Model 12. Strict loading schedules were mandated to keep pitching and short-period oscillations stable across varying passenger and fuel weights.
- Stall Characteristics: The cantilever low-wing geometry produced a clean stall with no artificial stall warning system — requiring strict adherence to operational airspeed limits on approach.
