Aircraft Overview & Design Evolution

Developed from the Lockheed Constellation/Super Constellation airframe lineage (including the PO-1W/WV-1 prototypes), the Warning Star series served under multiple designations: RC-121 (early USAF radar reconnaissance/training), EC-121 (USAF electronic surveillance/early warning), and WV-1/WV-2/WV-3 (U.S. Navy designations prior to the 1962 tri-service unification). The defining feature of all variants was the large upper dorsal radome and lower ventral radome housing APS-20 and related search radar systems.

Aerodynamics & Handling

The addition of the massive dorsal and ventral radomes fundamentally altered the basic L-1049 aerodynamic profile. Parasitic drag increased substantially, scaling up total zero-lift drag (CD,0) and reducing overall aerodynamic efficiency (L/D ratio). The large side-profile surface area of the radomes destabilized directional stability, requiring additional fin area on the distinctive triple-tail configuration. The practical service ceiling was restricted to 18,000–25,000 feet — significantly lower than the standard passenger Super Constellation. Heavy reliance on hydraulically boosted control surfaces was required to manage high control forces during long patrol sweeps and heavy gross weight takeoffs.

Powerplant — Wright R-3350 Turbo-Compound

Four Wright R-3350-34 or -42 Duplex-Cyclone Turbo-Compound 18-cylinder radial engines, each delivering 3,400 horsepower via three blowdown exhaust turbines for energy recovery. The Flight Engineer managed continuous cooling demands during high-power, low-speed patrol operations. Manual engine oil tank selector overrides safeguarded lubrication continuity during extended over-water missions.
