Kawasaki Ki-10 "Perry" — Army Type 95 Fighter

The Kawasaki Ki-10 "Perry" (九五式戦闘機, Kyūgo-shiki Sentōki) was the pinnacle of Imperial Japanese Army biplane fighter design — a machine that deliberately chose extreme maneuverability over the raw speed offered by the emerging monoplane generation. Designed under chief engineer Takeo Doi, the Ki-10 remained the IJA's frontline fighter from 1935 through the early years of the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Aerodynamic & Structural Notes

  • Wing Geometry: Sesquiplane (unequal span) configuration — all-metal structure, light alloy and fabric covering. Upper wing span 10.02 m, significantly larger than the lower wing.
  • Control Surfaces: Ailerons fitted exclusively to the upper wing to reduce mechanical complexity and adverse yaw.
  • Parasitic Drag Reduction: Narrow-profile welded steel-tube fuselage with mixed metal/fabric skinning; streamlined wheel spats over fixed undercarriage to clean airflow beneath the lower wing.

Engine Technical Notes

Powerplant: Kawasaki Ha-9-IIa (Ha-9-IIb on Model 2) — 12-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 60° Vee piston engine, a highly developed evolution of licensed European inline technology.

  • Propeller: Initially two-bladed wooden; updated via technical bulletin to a three-bladed fixed-pitch metal propeller
