✈️ Historical Note

The Junkers Ju 86 holds a distinguished place in aviation history as one of the world's first production aircraft powered by diesel engines. Designed in the mid-1930s by Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorenwerke AG, the Ju 86 was revolutionary for its use of Junkers Jumo 205 diesel engines, offering exceptional fuel efficiency and extended range. First flown in November 1934, it served both as a commercial airliner with Deutsche Lufthansa, South African Airways, and Swissair, and as a military bomber with the Luftwaffe.

During the Spanish Civil War, the Ju 86 saw combat with the Condor Legion. It participated in early WWII operations including the invasion of Poland and Norwegian campaign, though its relatively slow speed led to withdrawal from frontline bomber duties by 1941. The aircraft's most remarkable chapter came with the high-altitude P and R variants (1940-1942), featuring pressurized cabins and turbocharged engines allowing operation above 42,000 feet - beyond the reach of contemporary fighters. These variants conducted reconnaissance missions over Britain, the Soviet Union, and North Africa until specialized high-altitude Spitfires were developed to counter them.

Approximately 900 Ju 86 aircraft were produced between 1936 and 1943 across variants A, B, D, E, G, K, P, R, and Z at Junkers facilities in Dessau and Bernburg, and under license in Sweden by ASJA (later Saab). These original technical manuals represent authentic documentation used by Luftwaffe ground crews, maintenance personnel, and flight crews throughout the aircraft's operational service.
