Ilyushin Il-62 / Il-62M — Soviet Long-Range Jet Airliner
Technical Documentation Library — 93 Original Factory Documents
Historical Overview
The Ilyushin Il-62 is the Soviet Union's first long-range narrow-body jet airliner, designed by the Ilyushin Aviation Bureau and introduced into Aeroflot service in 1967. Its distinctive rear-engine, T-tail configuration — with four Kuznetsov NK-8-4 turbofans mounted in paired nacelles at the tail — gave the aircraft an aerodynamically clean wing and exceptional range for its era.
The Il-62M, introduced in 1974, represented a significant upgrade: the original NK-8-4 engines were replaced by four Soloviev D-30KU turbofans, each producing 107.9 kN (24,250 lbf) of thrust. A 5,000-litre fuel tank was integrated into the vertical tail fin, extending range to 10,000 km (5,400 nautical miles) — sufficient for nonstop intercontinental routes. The Il-62M became the flagship of Soviet long-haul aviation and served with Aeroflot and numerous Warsaw Pact carriers through the 1990s and beyond.

Aerodynamic Features: Swept-back wing with fixed drooping leading-edge sawtooth extension on the outer two-thirds; double-slotted trailing-edge flaps; two upper-surface spoilers; three-section ailerons. The rear-engine layout keeps the entire dorsal wing surface aerodynamically clean.
Stability: Allowable CG range 27%–34% MAC. Retractable dual-wheel tail landing gear prevents tail-tipping during ground loading. Turbulence tolerance: 16–18 m/s severe air turbulence.
Engine Notes: D-30KU uses a single merged exhaust per nacelle. Outer engine pair fitted with bucket-type thrust reversers; inner pair without reversers to prevent hot gas ingestion into the tail structure.
