About the Hirth HM 506
Historical Background
First introduced in 1934 by Hirth Motoren GmbH (Stuttgart/Benningen, Germany), the HM 506 evolved directly from the proven 4-cylinder HM 504 as part of a standardized modular engine family sharing identical cylinder dimensions. Fewer than 100 units were produced, making surviving documentation exceptionally rare. It powered early advanced Luftwaffe training and aerobatic prototypes including the Bücker Bü 133A/B Jungmeister, though its military role was largely eclipsed by radial alternatives during full production. Post-war use was highly limited, with most surviving units preserved in private vintage collections or museums.

Extremely rare in airworthy condition. Isolated restored examples operate under special experimental, vintage, or classic airworthiness regulations aboard surviving Bücker Bü 133 Jungmeister airframes. No active Type Certificate holder exists; no active Service Bulletins or Airworthiness Directives apply. The vast majority of surviving units are static museum pieces.
