About the Hirth HM 500
Historical Background
First introduced in 1938 and produced through 1945, the HM 500 was developed by Hirth-Motoren G.m.b.H. (acquired by Ernst Heinkel and the Reich Air Ministry in 1941). Evolved from the proven HM 504, it featured a redesigned one-piece closed crankcase for improved rigidity and serviceability. It powered the Bücker Bü 181 Bestmann — the standard primary elementary flight trainer of the Luftwaffe — with over 3,400 aircraft built. Post-war, it continued service in Czech-built Zlín Z-181/Z-281 variants and Swedish Sk 25 trainers repurposed for private general aviation.
