Historical Note
The He 51 emerged from the clandestine German rearmament programme of the early 1930s, first flying in 1933 and entering Luftwaffe service in 1935 as the service's inaugural standard fighter. A conventional single-bay all-metal biplane with fabric covering and N-type interplane struts, it was praised for its light controls, low wing loading, and exceptional turn radius. The BMW VI 7.3Z V12 delivered 750 hp, giving the aircraft a maximum speed of 330 km/h at sea level. The He 51C-1 introduced underwing racks for four 50 kg bombs, transitioning the type into a ground-attack role during the Spanish Civil War with the Legion Condor. Though outclassed by monoplane fighters by 1937, the He 51 remained in training and ground-attack roles through the early war years. Variants ranged from the initial A-1 through the floatplane B-2 to the C and D ground-attack marks covered in this collection.

Engineering Norms and Standards
The He 51 was designed and built to Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM) engineering standards of the mid-1930s, with documentation issued under the Luftdienstvorschrift (LDv) system. The BMW VI 7.3Z engine operated to military power ratings with glycol cooling and a two-bladed metal propeller. Standard armament comprised two 7.92 mm MG 17 machine guns above the engine with 500 rounds each, with the C-1 adding four 50 kg bomb racks. Empty weight was 1,460 kg; loaded weight 1,900 kg.
