The Heinkel He 45 was developed in 1930 by Ernst Heinkel Flugzeugwerke as a conventional single-bay biplane intended for reconnaissance and light bombing roles. Its structure combined a welded tubular steel fuselage with all-wooden, fabric-covered wings — a robust and proven configuration for the era. Powered by the BMW VI 7.3 V-12 liquid-cooled engine producing 750 hp, the He 45 offered a maximum speed of 290 km/h and a range of 1,200 km, making it a capable platform for its intended missions.
The aircraft saw extensive operational service during the Spanish Civil War, where it was deployed by the Condor Legion under the designation "Pavo" (Turkey). By 1937–1938, however, it was considered obsolete in the fighter-bomber role and was progressively replaced by the Henschel Hs 126. Despite this, the He 45 continued to serve as a training aircraft within the Luftwaffe and the Deutsche Verkehrsfliegerschule (DVS), valued for its stable handling characteristics — essential for pilot instruction. Several variants were produced, including the He 45b (fitted with a four-blade propeller) and the He 45c/C (equipped with the 750 hp BMW VI 7.3 variant). The type also saw limited early World War II service before being fully retired from front-line duties.
