Historical Note

The Hawker Hurricane stands as one of the most significant fighter aircraft in aviation history. Designed by Sydney Camm and first flown in 1935, the Hurricane combined traditional fabric-covered construction with modern features: retractable landing gear, enclosed cockpit, and eight wing-mounted machine guns — making it easier to produce, simpler to repair, and more forgiving to fly than its contemporaries.

During the Battle of Britain in 1940, Hurricanes equipped 32 squadrons compared to 19 Spitfire squadrons. Hurricane pilots attacked German bomber formations while Spitfires engaged escorts — meaning Hurricanes faced the heaviest combat and achieved approximately 60% of all enemy aircraft destroyed. Beyond the Battle of Britain, the Hurricane served in every theatre of WWII: Malta, North Africa, Arctic convoys, and the Far East. It proved remarkably adaptable as fighter-bomber, tank-buster (40mm cannons), naval fighter (Sea Hurricane), and night fighter. Over 14,500 Hurricanes were built, making it the most numerous British fighter of the war.

This collection draws from the original Hawker Aircraft Ltd. manufacturing drawing archive, converted from wartime microfilm records. The drawings span the full production history of the Hurricane from early Mk.I airframes through to late-production Mk.IV and Sea Hurricane variants, covering:

• Hawker Aircraft Ltd., Kingston upon Thames — Original factory engineering drawings produced at the Hawker works, stamped and dated by the original draughtsmen. These are the definitive manufacturing documents of the Hurricane programme, covering fuselage tubular steel structure, wing assemblies, flight controls, undercarriage, powerplant installations, and all major systems.
• Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Reference Drawings — A dedicated section of General Arrangement drawings and key structural references used by the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight for ongoing airworthiness maintenance of their flying Hurricanes.
