Aircraft Coverage

The Grumman F4F-4 and the Eastern Aircraft FM-1 Wildcat (built by General Motors) are structurally and aerodynamically identical aircraft. The FM-1 differed primarily in reducing wing armament from six guns to four, saving weight and increasing ammunition capacity — both aircraft share the same technical and engineering baselines. The FM-2 (lightweight variant) is also covered within this drawing set.

The F4F/FM Wildcat is one of the most thoroughly documented carrier-based fighters of World War II, thanks to archival testing by the U.S. Navy Bureau of Aeronautics and the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA).

Engine Technical Notes

The FM-1 and F4F-4 utilized the Pratt & Whitney R-1830-86 Twin Wasp — a 14-cylinder, two-row radial engine with a two-stage, two-speed supercharger.

  • Takeoff Power: 1,200 hp at 2,700 RPM
  • Military Power (Low Gear): 1,100 hp up to 3,500 ft
  • Military Power (High Gear): 1,000 hp up to 19,000 ft
  • Propeller: Curtiss Electric 3-blade constant-speed, gear ratio 3:2
  • Cooling: NACA cowl ring with adjustable mechanical cowl flaps for cylinder head temperature control during steep climbs

Aerodynamic Profile

Wind tunnel evaluations at NACA Langley provided crucial engineering telemetry for the F4F mid-wing configuration.

  • Airfoil: NACA 23015 at root, tapering to NACA 23009 at tips — high-lift with predictable stall progression
  • Wing Area: 260 sq. ft. gross; wing loading ~31 lbs/sq. ft.
  • Flaps: Hydraulically operated split trailing-edge flaps, total area 29.7 sq. ft.

Handling & Stability

  • Longitudinal Stability: Strongly positive under clean loading. Aft C.G. near 27.4% M.A.C. can induce neutral elevator control force at elevated G-loads.
  • Lateral/Directional: Crisp roll rates below 220 mph; control forces stiffen at higher speeds due to aerodynamic loading on fabric surfaces.
  • FM-1 Benefit: Removal of two outer wing guns reduced wing-tip inertia, marginally improving roll response and lateral oscillation vs. the F4F-4.

Key Engineering & Structural Notes

  • Armament Change (F4F-4 → FM-1): Reverted from 6 guns (240 rpg) to 4 guns (430 rpg), extending continuous trigger time from ~10 seconds to ~30 seconds.
  • Carrier Compatibility: Manual hand-cranked landing gear and folding wings reduced 38-ft span to 14 ft 4 in for CVE deck stowage.
