Technical Overview — Fiat G.212

The Fiat G.212 was Italy's premier post-WWII three-engine transport, designed by Giuseppe Gabrielli as a larger, more powerful evolution of the wartime Fiat G.12. It served both the Aeronautica Militare Italiana and civil operators including Avio Linee Italiane (ALI), earning the nickname "Aula Volante" (Flying Classroom) for its extensive use in multi-engine navigation training.

Aerodynamic Configuration

  • Wing: Low-wing all-metal cantilever monoplane with high-aspect center-section; total wing area 116.6 m² (1,255 ft²).
  • Control Surfaces: Fabric-covered metal ailerons with split-type trailing-edge flaps for low-speed approach handling.
  • Tail Unit: Conventional cantilever tailplane with tall single fin and balanced rudder — optimized for asymmetric thrust management during engine-out scenarios.
