Wing Configuration & Structure

The G.12 was built with a trapezoidal cantilever low-wing layout divided into three structural sections. The centre wing section used high-strength steel tubing to absorb the stress of three engine installations. The tapered wing planform and clean aerodynamic lines minimised parasite drag. Fixed surfaces were metal-skinned; ailerons and flaps were fabric-covered to reduce trailing-edge weight and counter flutter.

Powerplant

The G.12C was powered by three Fiat A.74 R.C.42 14-cylinder air-cooled radial engines, each rated at 770 hp (574 kW), driving three-blade variable-pitch constant-speed metal propellers. The G.12CA variant substituted the Alfa Romeo 128 R.C. 18 radial. Later civil and export variants integrated Bristol Pegasus or Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engines. Standard fuel capacity was 2,560 litres across four centre-section wing tanks, expandable to 4,500 litres on long-range Gondar and GA configurations.

Stability & Handling

Longitudinal stability was maintained by an enlarged vertical tail fin, sized to compensate for asymmetric yaw forces in the event of a wing-engine failure. The undercarriage used an oleo-pneumatic system with main wheels retracting forward into the engine nacelles via a pneumatic circuit; the tailwheel was fixed. The forward cargo bay, positioned between the flight deck and passenger cabin, was deliberately engineered to counterbalance aft weight distribution and prevent dangerous centre-of-gravity shifts under varying load conditions.
