Fiat B.R. Series — Biplane Bomber Collection

The Fiat B.R. (Bombardiere Rosatelli) series — spanning the B.R.1, B.R.2, and B.R.3 — represents a defining chapter in Italian military aviation of the 1920s. Designed by the legendary engineer Celestino Rosatelli at Fiat Aviazione (Aeronautica d'Italia S.A., Torino), these heavy biplane bombers served as the backbone of daytime bombing and strategic reconnaissance for the Regia Aeronautica through the interwar period.

This Living Collection consolidates the surviving primary-source technical documentation for all three variants: original Italian Air Ministry assembly and maintenance manuals, and the two powerplant instruction manuals covering the Fiat A.14 and A.25 engines — published between 1918 and 1931 and issued under the authority of the Ministero dell'Aeronautica, Direzione Generale delle Costruzioni e degli Approvvigionamenti.

Aerodynamic & Structural Notes

  • Warren Truss Interplane Struts: From the B.R.1 onward, Rosatelli implemented rigid Warren truss interplane struts, eliminating external wire bracing entirely and significantly reducing structural interference drag.
  • Streamlined Fairings: All terminal connections of wing struts and wires were enclosed in aerodynamic aluminium casings for maximum cleanliness.
  • Leading-Edge Slats (B.R.3): Final production blocks integrated Handley Page leading-edge slats, preventing high-angle airflow separation and reducing low-speed stall risk.
  • Aileron Balance Planes: Small auxiliary aerodynamic balance planes positioned above the main top ailerons to reduce pilot control loads on the large wing surfaces.
  • Fuselage & Empennage: Rectangular mixed spruce/ash and steel tube framework; single tall rudder with braced horizontal stabilizers to counter slipstream torque from the 11-foot propeller.

Engine Technical Notes

Fiat A.14 — Powers the B.R.1. 12-cylinder, 60° V-configuration, liquid-cooled. Output: 700 hp. At introduction, one of the highest-capacity aviation engines globally.

Fiat A.25 (IV Serie) — Introduced on the B.R.2, continued on the B.R.3. Heavily refined 12-cylinder V-block. Output: 1,050 hp — a 50% increase over the A.14. Brought pressurized fuel delivery, redesigned radiator positioning, and exhaust pipes enclosed in teardrop metal fairings.
