Historical Note

The Dassault MD.450 Ouragan (Hurricane) holds a distinguished place in aviation history as France's first domestically-designed jet fighter to enter operational service. Developed in the late 1940s by Marcel Dassault's design bureau, the Ouragan represented France's determination to rebuild its aviation industry after World War II and establish independence in military aircraft production.

First flown on February 28, 1949, the Ouragan was powered by the Hispano-Suiza-built version of the British Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet engine, producing 5,000 lbf of thrust. The aircraft featured a distinctive straight-wing design, tricycle landing gear, and four 20mm Hispano-Suiza cannon mounted in the nose. With a maximum speed of 584 mph (940 km/h) and excellent handling characteristics, the Ouragan proved to be a capable fighter-bomber platform.

The French Air Force (Armée de l'Air) operated the Ouragan extensively throughout the 1950s, with 350 aircraft produced between 1951 and 1954. The type saw combat action during the Suez Crisis in 1956, where French Ouragans flew ground-attack missions with distinction. Beyond French service, the aircraft was exported to India (where it was known as the 'Toofani') and Israel, where it played a crucial role in the 1956 Sinai Campaign and continued in service through the 1960s.

The Ouragan's significance extends beyond its operational record. It established Dassault as a premier military aircraft manufacturer and paved the way for the company's legendary Mystère, Mirage, and Rafale fighter families. The aircraft demonstrated that France could design, build, and field world-class jet fighters, marking the renaissance of French military aviation in the jet age.

For aviation historians, restorers, and enthusiasts, these original technical manuals represent authentic primary-source documentation from the Ouragan's operational era. The detailed maintenance procedures, illustrated parts catalogs, pilot information, and technical specifications provide invaluable insights into the engineering, operation, and support of this pioneering French jet fighter. Each manual bears the official approvals and classifications of the Service des Marchés et de la Production Aéronautique, confirming their authenticity as the actual documentation used throughout the aircraft's service life.

Today, surviving Ouragans are preserved in museums worldwide, celebrated as symbols of French aviation achievement and Cold War military history. This documentation collection preserves the technical legacy of an aircraft that launched one of the world's most successful fighter aircraft dynasties.
