💡 Engine Technical Notes — Wright R-975 Whirlwind

Power Plant: One Wright Whirlwind R-975-28, 9-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engine rated at 420–450 hp (313–336 kW), driving a two-blade variable-pitch metal propeller. Positioned as a lower-power, more fuel-efficient option for intermediate aviator transition compared to the heavier SNJ (North American T-6 Texan) with its Pratt & Whitney R-1340.

🔎 Handling & Stability

Tandem Configuration: Evaluated under U.S. Navy criteria for transitional training. The wide glass canopy offered excellent visibility for both instructor and student, addressing limitations common in older biplane trainers.

Control Response: Built to mirror the rapid control surfaces of a frontline fighter — intentionally teaching stall recovery, rudder control against engine torque, and complex instrument flight conditions.
