The Convair B-36 Peacemaker was the largest mass-produced piston-engine aircraft in history and the United States Air Force's first true intercontinental strategic bomber. Spanning 230 feet (70.1 m) and capable of lifting 410,000 lbs (186,000 kg) to altitudes exceeding 45,000 feet, the Peacemaker defined the early Cold War deterrence posture of Strategic Air Command from 1948 to 1959.

Aerodynamic Performance & Stability
The B-36 relied on a massive laminar-flow wing spanning 230 feet (70.1 m) with a surface area of 4,772 sq ft (443.5 m²). The thick cross-section allowed internal crawlways so flight engineers could service the pusher engines in flight. General stability was normal under standard trim conditions, though the wing's geometry created significant pitch change during flap deployment, demanding precise pilot compensation. At its service ceiling, the B-36 could outmaneuver contemporary jet interceptors simply by executing mild turns — the chasing jets lacked the aerodynamic lift to follow at extreme altitude without stalling.
Propulsion — "Six Turning, Four Burning"
The iconic mixed propulsion layout combined six Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major 28-cylinder radials (3,800 hp each, pusher configuration) with four General Electric J47 turbojet pods (5,200 lbf thrust each) mounted in twin outboard wing pylons. The pusher arrangement kept the leading edge aerodynamically clean but created chronic cooling and icing challenges for the carburetors, which drew warm air from wing ducts rather than ambient ram air. The 5-metre Curtiss Electric propellers required independent cooling systems with automatic suck-in spinner doors to prevent pitch-change gear train damage.

Historical Engineering Notes
The "Featherweight" upgrade programme stripped all non-essential equipment — including defensive remote-controlled gun turrets — to counter fast Soviet jet interceptors, pushing the service ceiling well beyond 50,000 feet. The original XB-36 prototype used massive single tires that restricted operations to only three runways worldwide; engineering bulletins mandated a transition to a multi-wheel four-cannon bogie configuration for all production models to distribute weight across standard USAF tarmacs.
