Engineering Profile
The Consolidated Vultee B-24 Liberator's engineering identity is defined by three interlocking decisions: the Davis wing, the turbo-supercharged Twin Wasp powerplant, and a fuselage optimised for maximum internal volume at the cost of structural redundancy.
The Davis Wing. The Liberator's shoulder-mounted, high-aspect-ratio wing — 110-foot span, 1,048 sq ft area — was its most distinctive and most debated feature. The thin, narrow Davis aerofoil dramatically reduced induced drag at cruising speeds, delivering range and fuel economy that no contemporary heavy bomber could match. The tradeoff was unforgiving: minimal structural tolerance for battle damage, reduced low-speed lift, and a tendency toward tip stall if approach speeds dropped during banking. Every pilot who flew the B-24 knew the wing's limits intimately.
Aerodynamic Development. Early variants underwent continuous refinement. The B-24A and LB-30B introduced improved fairings and fuselage profiling to reduce localised drag. Later production blocks added retractable Sperry ball turrets to preserve laminar flow lines along the belly when not in use. Performance Data — B-24J. Maximum speed: 290–303 mph at military power. Cruising speed: 215 mph. Gross weight tested: 41,000 lbs clean. Maximum takeoff weight: 65,000 lbs combat-laden. Service ceiling: 28,000 ft. Maximum range: 2,100–3,200 miles (extended with auxiliary tanks). Standard bomb load: 5,000–8,000 lbs; maximum short-range capacity: 12,800 lbs.
Powerplant. Four Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp 14-cylinder, two-row, air-cooled radial engines — variants R-1830-43, -41, and -65. Each produced 1,200 hp at 2,700 RPM for takeoff. Exhaust-driven General Electric B-22 turbo-superchargers sustained that military rating to 31,800 feet. Hamilton Standard 3-bladed constant-speed variable-pitch propellers, 11 ft 7 in diameter. From the B-24C onward, oval-shaped nacelles replaced the original circular type to accommodate turbo-supercharger ducting beneath the engine blocks.
Handling and Stability. Wartime pilot training manuals are unambiguous: the B-24 was demanding. High wing loading required high approach speeds and left no margin for slow-speed banking errors. Flight controls were entirely manual and unboosted — at high gross weights, elevator and aileron forces were physically exhausting in turbulence or evasive manoeuvring. The tricycle undercarriage was a forward-thinking layout, but ground steering relied on differential braking and asymmetric thrust, making taxiing notoriously stiff. In water ditching, the high-wing configuration and structurally weak bomb-bay doors were catastrophic — a vulnerability documented in operational loss reports throughout the war.

Original publications in this collection document specific structural and modification requirements mandated during production: T.O. 01-1-225 (General Service Notes, Consolidated Model 32, airframe rigidity and field maintenance rules); T.O. AN 01-5EE-1 (operational thresholds, mixture controls, and manifold pressure limits for the R-1830 on B-24 type aircraft); Maintenance Memo 70-1-1 (field changes including radome drain hole enlargement to address moisture buildup and radar distortion in ventral tracking domes).
