Aircraft Technical Profile

The Consolidated PB4Y-1 Liberator was the U.S. Navy's maritime patrol adaptation of the B-24 Liberator, powered by four Pratt & Whitney R-1830-43 or -65 Twin Wasp turbosupercharged radials. Its defining aerodynamic feature was the Davis Wing — a high-aspect-ratio, low-drag 110-foot span profile delivering exceptional cruise efficiency, though with known compressibility risks at high speed. The PB4Y-2 Privateer was a purpose-built naval evolution: single-tail configuration, lengthened fuselage, and optimized for low-altitude maritime patrol below 5,000 feet.

Performance Data (PB4Y-1)

  • Maximum Speed: 279 mph (242 knots) at 25,000 ft
  • Cruising Speed: 148 mph (128 knots) for maximum range
  • Maximum Range: ~2,960 miles
  • Service Ceiling: 31,800 ft
  • Gross Weight: 60,000 lbs (overloaded to 62,000+ lbs in theater)

Provenance & Archival Notes

All nine documents are original wartime-restricted publications. The Pilot's Guide carries a Fleet Air Wing Fourteen provenance, placing it directly within Pacific theater operational use. The Consolidated Vultee instruction manuals retain their original embossed covers with the Consolidated Vultee eagle roundel, confirming factory-issue status. The General Service Notes copy is preserved in a high-fidelity full-color scan, retaining the deep navy cover and white Consolidated Vultee insignia in exceptional archival condition.
