Historical Note:
The Boeing B-50 Superfortress represented the ultimate evolution of the legendary B-29 design. First flown in 1947, the B-50 featured more powerful Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major engines, a taller vertical stabilizer, and strengthened airframe construction using 75ST aluminum alloy. While externally similar to its B-29 predecessor, approximately 75% of the B-50's structure was redesigned.
Serving primarily during the early Cold War era (1948-1965), the B-50 became the first aircraft to fly non-stop around the world when the "Lucky Lady II" completed its historic circumnavigation in March 1949 with aerial refueling. The type served as America's primary strategic bomber until replaced by the B-47 Stratojet, and later variants served distinguished careers in reconnaissance, weather reconnaissance, and aerial refueling roles as the KB-50 tanker.
Only 370 B-50s were produced, making these technical documents particularly valuable for preserving the engineering legacy of this transitional aircraft that bridged the propeller and jet ages of strategic aviation.
