Online Aviation Library presents a deep-archive collection of surviving original technical publications for the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress — spanning every major production variant from the early YB-17 and B-17A through the definitive B-17G and its post-war Navy derivative, the PB-1W. 🔎 Aerodynamic Design & Structural Reports

The B-17 was built around a high-aspect-ratio, low-wing layout optimised for lifting heavy loads to extreme operating ceilings. Its 103 ft 9 in span and 1,420 sq ft wing area used a thick NACA 0018 root airfoil tapering to a NACA 0010 tip — a profile chosen for stable, predictable stall behaviour under combat load. The enclosed bomb bay kept all ordnance inside the primary fuselage line, limiting parasite drag on long-range transit legs. ⚙️ Engine Technical Notes

Four Wright R-1820 Cyclone 9-cylinder air-cooled radial engines powered every production B-17, each rated at 1,200 hp for takeoff and 1,000 hp normal cruise. General Electric B-22 exhaust-driven turbo-superchargers compressed thin ambient air to maintain sea-level manifold pressure above 25,000 ft. Hollow sodium-filled exhaust valves and cast aluminium cylinder-head cooling fins managed the thermal loads of sustained high-altitude operation. In combat emergencies, pilots could override wastegate limits to extract 1,380–1,500 hp — a procedure documented in the original technical orders included here.

📈 Handling & Stability

Stability testing at gross weights between 41,000 lb and 56,000 lb showed Mean Aerodynamic Chord ranges moving between 23.3% and 28.4% — a tight envelope that demanded precise fuel transfer management. Early B-17C/D models suffered directional instability under load; the B-17E resolved this with a sweeping dorsal fin and enlarged vertical stabiliser. As a taildragger, the B-17 required swift rudder corrections to prevent ground loops, and crosswind landings demanded sustained physical input through cable-driven controls.
