The first prototype, the Tudor I, made its maiden flight on June 14, 1945. The aircraft featured a pressurized fuselage, tricycle landing gear, and was powered by four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, representing cutting-edge technology for its time.

Several variants were developed to meet different operational requirements. The Tudor II was designed for British South American Airways (BSAA) for transatlantic routes, while the Tudor IV (also known as the Tudor 4) became the most successful variant, serving with BSAA on routes to South America. The Tudor V was developed as a freighter variant, capable of carrying substantial cargo loads on long-range routes.

Despite its advanced design, the Tudor faced significant challenges. The aircraft entered service with BSAA in 1947, but operational difficulties, including range limitations and payload restrictions, hampered its commercial success. The mysterious disappearances of two Tudor IV aircraft (Star Tiger in January 1948 and Star Ariel in January 1949) in the Bermuda Triangle area led to intense scrutiny, though no definitive cause was ever established for these losses.

The Tudor Freighter variant found more success in cargo operations, particularly during the Berlin Airlift of 1948-1949, where several Tudor freighters operated by British airlines made valuable contributions to the humanitarian effort, delivering essential supplies to blockaded West Berlin.

Production of the Tudor was limited, with only 38 aircraft built across all variants between 1945 and 1950. By the early 1950s, the type was being withdrawn from commercial service, replaced by more economical and reliable aircraft such as the Canadair Argonaut and later jet airliners.

Today, the Avro Tudor holds a distinguished place in aviation history as an ambitious but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to establish British dominance in post-war commercial aviation.
