The Founders
Jean Stampe (1895–1981) was a decorated Belgian aviator and aerobatic pioneer. A veteran of the First World War, he became one of Belgium's foremost display pilots in the 1920s, and his intimate understanding of what a pilot needed from an aircraft shaped every design that bore his name. Stampe was not merely a figurehead — he flew the prototypes, identified the deficiencies, and demanded the refinements.
Maurice Vertongen brought the engineering and commercial acumen that transformed Stampe's vision into manufacturable reality. Together, they established their works at Deurne, Antwerp, adjacent to what would become Antwerp International Airport — a deliberate choice that kept the factory in direct contact with the flying community it served.
The partnership was productive, prolific, and — in the context of Belgian aviation — historically unique. No other Belgian manufacturer of the interwar period produced such a coherent, continuously developed family of light aircraft across so many variants and roles.
The RSV Series — Building the Foundation (1922–1935)
The early output of Stampe et Vertongen was grouped under the RSV designation — a prefix derived from the initials of the company's registered name. These aircraft established the firm's reputation for docile handling, structural robustness, and adaptability to both civil and military training roles.
RSV.20-100 — The Parasol Pioneer
The RSV.20-100 was an early parasol-wing monoplane — an unconventional choice for a company that would become synonymous with the biplane configuration. Powered by a 100 hp engine, it demonstrated Stampe et Vertongen's willingness to explore configuration before settling on the formula that would define their legacy.
RSV.22 Series — The Trainer Biplane Takes Shape
The RSV.22-180 trainer biplane, and its variant the RSV.22-200, marked the firm's decisive commitment to the biplane trainer format. The 180 hp powerplant gave the aircraft genuine performance for advanced training, while the airframe's forgiving characteristics made it suitable for ab initio instruction.
The RSV.22-Lynx introduced the Armstrong Siddeley Lynx radial engine — a popular choice among European light aircraft manufacturers of the period — producing an advanced trainer biplane with enhanced reliability and a more modern powerplant profile. The RSV.22-Titan was the military variant of the series, adapted for Belgian air force requirements and representing the company's first serious engagement with state procurement.
RSV.23-180
The RSV.23-180 continued the trainer biplane lineage with incremental refinements to the airframe and systems, maintaining the 180 hp power output that had proven well-matched to the training role.
RSV.26 Series — Versatility Defined
The RSV.26-100 represented one of the most ingenious concepts in the Stampe et Vertongen catalogue: a trainer and tourer biplane convertible into a monoplane. This configuration flexibility — offered in variants including the RSV.18-100 and RSV.18-105 — reflected the commercial pragmatism of the interwar market, where a single airframe needed to serve multiple buyers with different requirements.
The RSV.26-140 trainer biplane extended the series with a 140 hp powerplant, and was produced in further variants: the RSV.26-180 and the RSV.26-Lynx, the latter again adopting the Armstrong Siddeley radial that had proven its worth in the RSV.22 series.
RSV.28-180 — Advanced Training Refined
The RSV.28-180 advanced trainer biplane represented the mature expression of the RSV formula — a capable, well-balanced aircraft suited to the final stages of military pilot training, where handling precision and performance margins both matter.
RSV.32 Series — The Most Prolific RSV
The RSV.32 family was the most extensively developed of the RSV trainer biplanes, produced across a remarkable range of engine options that reflected the diversity of operator requirements across Europe. The base RSV.32-90 was offered alongside variants powered by 100, 105, 110, 120, and 130 hp engines — the RSV.32-100, RSV.32-105, RSV.32-110, RSV.32-120, and RSV.32-130 — making the RSV.32 one of the most configurable light training biplanes of its generation.
The SV Series — Maturity and the Masterpiece (1933–1954)
By the early 1930s, Stampe et Vertongen had accumulated sufficient experience to move beyond the RSV prefix and establish a new, more refined design family. The SV series represented the company at the height of its powers — producing aircraft that served military air forces, aerobatic champions, and private owners with equal distinction.
SV.4 — The Masterpiece
The SV.4 trainer and tourer biplane is, without question, the aircraft for which Stampe et Vertongen will be remembered. First flown in 1933, it was designed from the outset for both primary training and aerobatic performance — a combination that few aircraft of any era have achieved with such elegance.
The SV.4 was adopted by the Belgian Air Force, the French Armée de l'Air, and — following the Liberation — was produced under licence in France by SNCAN (Nord), which built over 700 examples as the Nord 1000 Stampe. It was on the SV.4 that generations of French and Belgian military pilots earned their wings, and on which the aerobatic champions of the postwar era honed their craft.
Surviving SV.4 aircraft remain among the most prized warbirds in European collections, regularly appearing at airshows where their slow-roll authority and crisp control response continue to draw admiration from pilots and spectators alike.
SV.5 — Military Training Biplane
The SV.5 was developed as a dedicated military training biplane, intended to bridge the gap between the elementary instruction provided by the SV.4 and the demands of operational aircraft. Its role in the Belgian Air Force's training pipeline placed it at the centre of the nation's pilot production effort in the years immediately preceding the Second World War.
SV.7 — Reconnaissance-Bomber
The SV.7 represented Stampe et Vertongen's most ambitious step into the military combat role — a reconnaissance-bomber designed to meet Belgian Air Force requirements for a versatile tactical aircraft. While the SV.7 did not achieve the production volumes of the training types, it demonstrated the company's capacity to engineer beyond the light aircraft category.
SV.10 — Biplane Bomber
The SV.10 biplane bomber extended the company's engagement with the military combat market. Like the SV.7, it reflected the Belgian Air Force's interwar procurement strategy of sourcing domestically where possible — a policy that sustained Stampe et Vertongen through the difficult economic conditions of the 1930s.
SV.18 — Closing the Circle
The SV.18 represented a further development within the SV family, continuing the lineage that had begun with the RSV series more than a decade earlier. By this stage, Stampe et Vertongen had established a design philosophy — light, responsive, structurally honest — that ran as a consistent thread through every aircraft they produced.
The German Occupation and the Postwar Revival
The German invasion of Belgium in May 1940 brought Stampe et Vertongen's production to an abrupt halt. The Deurne works were occupied, and the company's capacity was either suppressed or redirected under German administration. Jean Stampe himself went into exile, continuing to advocate for Belgian aviation from abroad.
The Liberation of Belgium in September 1944 opened the path to revival. The most significant consequence of the postwar period was not the resumption of Belgian production — which remained limited — but the French licence manufacture of the SV.4. SNCAN's Nord 1000 Stampe programme, producing aircraft at Issy-les-Moulineaux and Les Mureaux, ensured that the SV.4 design reached a scale of production that the original Antwerp works could never have achieved alone.
This French chapter of the Stampe story is one of the more remarkable episodes in European aviation history: a Belgian design, born in Antwerp, becoming the standard elementary trainer of the French Air Force and the foundation of French aerobatic excellence for two postwar generations.
Legacy
Stampe et Vertongen ceased independent production in the early 1950s, but their legacy endures in three distinct dimensions.
First, in the airworthy survivors — SV.4 aircraft that continue to fly at European airshows, maintained by owners who understand that they are custodians of something irreplaceable.
Second, in the aerobatic tradition — the SV.4's role in training the postwar generation of French and Belgian aerobatic pilots created a lineage of airmanship that flows directly into the competitive aerobatic culture of modern Europe.
