There is one engine family that, more than any other, defines the sound and feel of utility aviation worldwide. Origins: A Separate Identity from the Start
Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) is headquartered in Longueuil, Québec, on the south shore of Montréal. While it operates as a subsidiary of Pratt & Whitney (itself part of RTX Corporation, formerly Raytheon Technologies), P&WC functions as an independent design and manufacturing entity — not a branch plant of the American parent, but a full engineering organisation with its own engine families, its own type certificates, and its own global customer base.
The distinction matters. The PT6, the PW100, the PW300 — these are Canadian designs, developed in Longueuil by Canadian engineers. The American parent provided capital and corporate structure; the engineering came from Québec.
P&WC was established in 1928 as a Canadian subsidiary, initially focused on licence production and overhaul. The transformation into an original design house began in the late 1950s with the decision to develop a wholly new turboprop engine for the utility aviation market — a decision that would produce the PT6.
The PT6: The Engine That Changed Everything
Design Philosophy
The PT6 entered development in 1958 and first ran in 1960. Its design incorporated several features that were unconventional at the time and proved to be strokes of genius:
- Free turbine architecture — the power turbine is mechanically independent from the gas generator, allowing the propeller to be stopped while the engine continues to run. This dramatically simplifies ground operations and improves reliability.
- Reverse airflow — air enters at the rear of the engine, flows forward through the compressor and combustion section, then reverses to exit through the exhaust. This allows the engine to be mounted with the propeller gearbox at the front and the exhaust at the rear — a clean, practical installation.
- Modular construction — the engine is divided into discrete modules that can be removed and replaced independently, dramatically reducing maintenance time and cost.
- Exceptional reliability — the PT6 achieved time-between-overhaul (TBO) figures that were revolutionary for their era, and the engine's on-condition maintenance philosophy further reduced operator costs.
Entry into Service
The PT6A-6 entered service in 1964 aboard the Beechcraft King Air 90 — the beginning of a partnership between P&WC and Beechcraft/Textron Aviation that continues to this day. The King Air family, powered exclusively by PT6 variants, became the best-selling turboprop business aircraft in history — a direct consequence of the PT6's reliability and economics.

The PT6 family now spans from 500 shp to over 1,800 shp, powering aircraft from single-engine bush planes to large twin-turboprop regional transports. No other turboprop engine family covers this range with a single continuous design lineage.
The PW100 / PW150: Regional Turboprops
As the PT6 dominated the utility and business turboprop market, P&WC developed a larger engine family for the regional airline sector:
PW100 Series
The PW100 entered service in 1984, designed specifically for the new generation of 30–70 seat regional turboprops. Its primary applications include:
- ATR 42 and ATR 72 — the dominant European regional turboprops, powered by PW120/PW127 variants
- Bombardier Dash 8 Q100/200/300 — the Canadian regional turboprop family
- CASA/IPTN CN-235 and C-295 — military and utility transports
- Fokker 27 Friendship (later variants) and Fokker 50
The PW100 brought the same free-turbine philosophy and modular construction of the PT6 to a larger power class, achieving similar reliability and operator economics at the regional airline level.
PW150 Series
The PW150A is the most powerful engine in the P&WC turboprop family, producing 5,071 shp. It powers the Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 — the largest and fastest member of the Dash 8 family, capable of competing with regional jets on speed while retaining turboprop economics on shorter sectors.
Business and Regional Jet Engines: PW300, PW500, PW600
P&WC's engineering capability extended beyond turboprops into the turbofan market for business jets:
PW300 Series
Entering service in 1992, the PW300 family powers mid-size business jets including the Dassault Falcon 7X (PW307), Cessna Citation Sovereign (PW306), and Embraer Legacy 500/600. Thrust range: 13–29 kN.
PW500 Series
The PW500 powers light business jets including the Cessna Citation Encore and Citation Bravo. Thrust range: 10–16 kN.
PW600 Series
The PW600 is P&WC's entry into the very light jet (VLJ) market, powering the Cessna Citation Mustang (PW615F) and Eclipse 500 (PW610F). These are among the smallest turbofan engines in production, bringing jet economics to the owner-flown market.
JT15D
The earlier JT15D turbofan — P&WC's first turbofan design, entering service in 1971 — powered the original Cessna Citation I/II and the Aermacchi MB-339 military trainer. It established P&WC's credibility in the turbofan market and remained in production for decades.
Military Applications
P&WC engines power a wide range of military aircraft:
- PT6T Twin Pac — two PT6 cores coupled to a single gearbox, powering the Bell 212 and Bell 412 helicopters
- PT6C-67C — powers the AgustaWestland AW139 helicopter
- PW206/207 — turboshaft engines for light helicopters including the Eurocopter EC135 and Bell 427/429
- PT6A-68 — powers the Pilatus PC-21 military trainer, the Beechcraft T-6 Texan II (the USAF/USN primary trainer), and the SIAI-Marchetti S-211
The PT6A-68 powering the T-6 Texan II is particularly significant: it means that virtually every US military pilot trained since 2000 has learned to fly on a Canadian engine.
P&WC Today
Pratt & Whitney Canada remains headquartered in Longueuil, employing over 6,000 people in Québec alone, with additional facilities in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Mississauga, Ontario. It is one of the largest aerospace employers in Canada and one of the most significant contributors to Canadian aerospace exports.
The PT6 continues in active production and development — the latest PT6 E-Series introduces dual-channel FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) for the first time in the PT6 family, bringing 21st-century engine management to the world's most trusted turboprop architecture.
Over six decades after its first run, the PT6 is still the engine the world's utility aviation depends on. That engine was designed in Longueuil, Québec. Canada built it. The world flies on it.
