Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) Aircraft

  • A6 / A7 (Ha-26) Shinten — 14-cylinder, two-row air-cooled radial, approximately 900–1,000 hp. Powered early production variants of the Ki-46 reconnaissance aircraft. The Shinten name reflects the Japanese tradition of poetic engine naming.
  • A8 (Ha-33) Kinsei (Venus) — 14-cylinder, two-row air-cooled radial. One of Mitsubishi's most prolific and important powerplants, with lineage traceable to early Pratt and Whitney Hornet designs. Powered variants of the A6M Zero, G3M, Ki-96, and Ki-100. The Kinsei family underwent continuous development throughout the war, with power outputs rising significantly across successive marks.
  • A10 (Ha-32) Kasei (Mars) — 14-cylinder, two-row air-cooled radial producing up to 1,800 hp in developed variants. A large-displacement powerplant that became the engine of choice for Japan's heaviest operational aircraft, including the G4M bomber, J2M interceptor, and the Kawanishi H8K flying boat. The Kasei was arguably Mitsubishi's most strategically important engine of the war.
  • A14 (Ha-31) Zuisei (Holy Star) — 14-cylinder, two-row air-cooled radial, designed for minimum frontal area and low drag. Powered the early A6M1 and A6M2 Zero prototypes and the Ki-46. The Zuisei's compact dimensions made it attractive for high-speed applications where aerodynamic cleanliness was paramount.
  • A20 (Ha-43 / Ha-211) — 18-cylinder, two-row air-cooled radial exceeding 2,000 hp. Mitsubishi's most powerful production-intent engine of the war, completed and bench-run in the final years of the conflict. Intended to power advanced platforms including the Ki-83 heavy fighter and the A7M Reppū. The A20 represented the apex of Mitsubishi's piston engine development.
  • Ha-42 — Projected high-output 18-cylinder engine derived from the Kasei architecture. Remained a design project; development was overtaken by the end of the war before hardware was completed.
  • Tokuro-1 — Liquid-fueled rocket engine developed in the final phase of the war under license and co-development with German technology, specifically to power the J8M Shūsui rocket interceptor — Japan's adaptation of the Messerschmitt Me 163 Komet. The Tokuro-1 represents Mitsubishi's sole venture into rocket propulsion and stands as a remarkable, if ultimately tragic, footnote in Japanese aerospace history: a technology born of desperation, transferred across oceans under wartime conditions, and cut short before it could be meaningfully deployed. Production ceased entirely in late 1945/1946 following Japan's surrender and the commencement of the Allied occupation, which enforced a complete ban on Japanese aircraft and aero-engine manufacturing — a prohibition that remained in force until 1952.
