In the closing years of World War II, a peculiar aircraft sat in a German hangar — a wooden glider with a near-vertical tail fin, a delta wing unlike anything flying at the time, and a cockpit perched so far forward it seemed to defy logic. This was the Lippisch DM-1, and it was never meant to fly fast. It was meant to prove that something faster than sound was possible.
Alexander Lippisch had spent decades chasing the delta. His obsession with tailless, swept-wing configurations led him through a series of increasingly radical designs — from the early Storch gliders of the 1920s to the rocket-powered Me 163 Komet. The DM-1 was the next step: a low-speed aerodynamic testbed for a proposed supersonic interceptor, the Lippisch P.13a, which was to be powered by a ramjet burning coal dust.
The DM-1 never flew under its own power. When American forces captured it in 1945, it was shipped to the United States and tested in the NACA Langley full-scale wind tunnel. What the engineers found there quietly influenced the direction of American delta-wing research — and, by extension, the aircraft that would follow.
