In 1998, a quiet but historically significant transaction took place in Argentine aviation: a newly formed company called LAVIASA — officially Lavia Argentina S.A., variously referenced as Latinoamericana de Aviación or Fábrica Latinoamericana de Aeronaves — purchased from the New Piper Aircraft Company the global manufacturing rights, molds, templates, and more than 2,400 technical blueprints for the iconic PA-25 Pawnee agricultural aircraft series.
With that acquisition, LAVIASA became the primary authority for the continued airworthiness and production of one of the most widely used agricultural aircraft in history — a type that had served Latin American farmers, foresters, and aerial operators for decades under both Piper and the Argentine licensee Chincul S.A. LAVIASA did not merely acquire a product line; it assumed stewardship of a global fleet.
Foundation and Origins
LAVIASA was established around 1998, formed by a joint venture between an Argentine agricultural aviation entrepreneur and a retired Argentine Air Force officer who had previously served as director of the Fábrica Militar de Aviones in Córdoba — Argentina's historic state aircraft manufacturing centre. The combination of operational agricultural aviation experience and deep military-industrial manufacturing knowledge gave the company an unusually strong foundation for the task it had taken on.
The company is based in Las Heras, Mendoza Province, in the foothills of the Andes — a region with a long tradition of agricultural aviation serving the vineyards, orchards, and grain fields of western Argentina.
The first LAVIASA-built aircraft completed its maiden flight on 11 December 1998 — less than a year after the Piper deal was concluded, a testament to the readiness of the team and the quality of the technical documentation acquired.
Type Certificates and Airworthiness Authority
LAVIASA actively holds the Type Certificates issued by the U.S. FAA and Argentina's ANAC (Administración Nacional de Aviación Civil) for the PA-25 Pawnee series. This is not a nominal holding: it means LAVIASA is the legally recognised authority responsible for maintaining global airworthiness continuity for the thousands of legacy Pawnee aircraft built by Piper and Chincul S.A. over the preceding decades.
Operators of original Piper PA-25 aircraft anywhere in the world — seeking parts, modifications, or airworthiness data — must ultimately reference LAVIASA as the Type Certificate holder. This gives the company a unique and durable position in global agricultural aviation that extends far beyond its own production output.
The PUELCHE Series
LAVIASA produces and markets the PA-25 under the name PUELCHE — named after the cold, dry wind that descends from the Andes across the Argentine pampas, a fitting name for an aircraft built to work the land. The current lineup comprises four primary models:
PA-25-235/260 PUELCHE (Fixed Pitch)
The baseline production model, fitted with standard McCauley fixed-pitch propellers. Configured for liquid spraying, solid dispersion (fertilisers and seeds), and glider towing. The workhorse of the PUELCHE family, optimised for simplicity, reliability, and low operating cost.
Two-Seat PUELCHE (Tandem Trainer)
A tandem dual-seat configuration built specifically for training agricultural pilots, as well as pipeline monitoring and patrol operations. Addresses the critical need for type-specific training in agricultural aviation, where handling characteristics differ significantly from general aviation types.
PA-25-260 PUELCHE II
Equipped with a 260 HP Lycoming O-540 engine and variable-pitch Hartzell propellers. The variable-pitch system improves efficiency across the speed range, particularly useful in the low-altitude, low-speed environment of agricultural operations where power management is critical.
PA-25-260 PUELCHE III
The most advanced variant in the current lineup, featuring:
- Fuel-injected Lycoming IO-540 engine — improved reliability and fuel efficiency over the carburetted O-540
- Three-blade Hartzell propeller — reduced noise and improved thrust characteristics
- Modern landing gear crossbow system — enhanced ground handling on unprepared strips
