Government Aircraft Factories (GAF) — Australia's Pioneer of Indigenous Aviation and Defence Systems
The Government Aircraft Factories (GAF) was an Australian government-owned aerospace manufacturer established in July 1939 at Fishermans Bend, Melbourne, Victoria. Originally formed as the Department of Aircraft Production (DAP) to reduce dependence on British military supplies during World War II, GAF became a pioneer of Australian defence and commercial aviation.
In 1987, the company was restructured into Aerospace Technologies of Australia (ASTA), which was eventually privatised and incorporated into what is today Boeing Australia.
Indigenous Aircraft Designs
While initially focused on wartime manufacturing, GAF later engineered its own unique, homegrown aircraft and drone platforms:
GAF Nomad
The factory's most ambitious commercial venture — a twin-turboprop, Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) utility transport aircraft. The variant family included the standard N22 and the stretched N24. It served with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and regional operators including Skywest.
GAF Jindivik
A highly successful remote-controlled target drone platform used extensively by Australian and allied forces for missile and defence system testing. The Jindivik became one of the most widely used aerial target drones of the Cold War era.
Licensed Military Production
To rapidly modernise the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), GAF built several prominent foreign fighter and bomber platforms under official government licences:
Bristol Beaufort & Beaufighter
Mass-produced locally during World War II to serve as crucial frontline bombers and maritime strike fighters. Australian-built Beauforts and Beaufighters played a significant role in the Pacific theatre.
Avro Lincoln
A heavy four-engine bomber built in the immediate post-war era, with the first Australian-assembled model taking flight in March 1946. The Lincoln served the RAAF through the early jet age.
English Electric Canberra (Mk 20/21)
A highly successful twin-engine jet bomber. The GAF-built variants entered combat service with the RAAF during the late 1950s and saw operational use in the Vietnam War.
Defence Systems & Missiles
Beyond fixed-wing aviation, GAF engineered early guided weaponry for localised defence and anti-submarine operations:
Malkara
A heavy, wire-guided anti-tank missile developed in tandem with the United Kingdom during the 1950s. Malkara was one of the most powerful anti-tank weapons of its era.
Ikara
An Australian-designed long-range, rocket-launched anti-submarine missile system widely adopted by allied navies. Ikara represented a significant indigenous weapons engineering achievement.
Strategic Legacy
Despite technical innovations, GAF struggled with profitability and government bureaucracy late in its life cycle. However, its advanced infrastructure laid the foundation for modern military aerospace assembly and high-end component manufacturing in Australia today. The Fishermans Bend facility — shared with the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation — remains one of Australia's most historically significant aerospace sites.
