The Fieseler Fi 103R Reichenberg stands as one of the most extraordinary — and sobering — aircraft concepts of the Second World War. A piloted adaptation of the infamous V-1 flying bomb (Fieseler Fi 103), the Reichenberg was developed in 1944 as a precision strike weapon intended to be guided by a human pilot to its target.

From Pulse-Jet to Piloted Weapon

The standard V-1 was a pulse-jet powered cruise missile, mass-produced and launched against Allied cities in 1944–45. Its guidance system, however, was rudimentary — accuracy was poor. The Reichenberg concept emerged from a proposal to place a pilot in the fuselage ahead of the warhead, allowing precision targeting of high-value strategic assets such as warships and bridges.

The aircraft retained the V-1's Argus As 014 pulse-jet engine and basic airframe, but added a small cockpit with minimal instrumentation, a canopy, and rudimentary flight controls. Four variants were developed (R I through R IV), with the R IV being the operational version carrying an 850 kg warhead.

A Mission With No Return

The Reichenberg was, in concept, a suicide weapon — though German authorities officially maintained that pilots could theoretically bail out at the last moment. In practice, the combination of speed, low altitude, and the nature of the mission made survival essentially impossible.

Remarkably, the programme attracted volunteers. Hanna Reitsch, the legendary German test pilot, flew early evaluation flights and was instrumental in identifying serious handling deficiencies that led to design revisions.

Never Deployed in Combat

Despite producing approximately 175 airframes, the Fi 103R was never used operationally. The Luftwaffe ultimately concluded that trained pilots were too valuable to expend in this manner, and the strategic calculus never justified deployment. The programme was quietly shelved before the war's end.

Technical Significance

The Reichenberg remains a unique artefact of wartime desperation engineering — a pulse-jet aircraft flown by a human pilot, bridging the gap between conventional aviation and the guided missile age that would follow. Its documentation, including flight test reports and engineering drawings, forms a rare and historically significant body of primary source material.
