Fábrica Argentina de Aviones «Brigadier San Martín» S.A. — universally known as FAdeA — stands as one of South America's most enduring and significant aerospace enterprises. Its story begins not in the jet age, but in the biplane era, when Argentina made a bold decision to build its own aircraft rather than depend entirely on foreign imports.
Origins: Instituto Aerotécnico / Fábrica Militar de Aviones (1927)
The institution was founded on 10 October 1927 in Córdoba, Argentina, initially as the Instituto Aerotécnico, later renamed Fábrica Militar de Aviones (FMA). Córdoba was chosen deliberately: situated in the geographic heart of the country, away from coastal vulnerabilities, it offered strategic depth and access to a growing industrial workforce.
From its earliest years, FMA produced licensed versions of foreign designs alongside indigenous projects — beginning with the Avro 504K Gosport biplane trainer in 1928 and the Dewoitine D.21 fighter in 1930. The factory quickly became the nucleus of Argentine aeronautical engineering, training generations of designers, engineers, and technicians.
The Golden Era: Indigenous Design and the Jet Age
The post-war decades saw FMA reach its creative peak. Under the influence of émigré engineers — including Kurt Tank (former chief designer of Focke-Wulf) and Reimar Horten (flying-wing pioneer) — the factory produced a series of remarkable indigenous designs:
- I.Ae. 27 Pulqui I (1947) — Argentina's first jet aircraft, and one of the first jet fighters developed in the Southern Hemisphere.
- I.Ae. 33 Pulqui II (1950) — a swept-wing jet fighter designed by Kurt Tank, representing a genuine leap in Argentine aeronautical ambition. Five prototypes built.
- I.Ae. 34 Clen Antú (1949) — a flying-wing glider designed by Reimar Horten, also known as the Horten XVa and XVb.
- I.Ae. 35 Huanquero (1953) — a twin-engine multi-role aircraft used for training, transport, and patrol duties.
- I.A. 50 Guaraní II (1963) — a twin-turboprop executive and utility transport that served both military and government roles for decades.
The IA 58 Pucará: Combat Proven
No aircraft defines FAdeA's legacy more vividly than the IA 58 Pucará. Designed as a counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft optimised for operations in difficult terrain, the Pucará first flew in 1967 and entered Argentine Air Force service in 1975. A total of 120 aircraft were built.
During the Falklands War of 1982, Pucará aircraft operated from Stanley and Goose Green airstrips under extremely demanding conditions — the only Argentine fixed-wing combat aircraft to operate from the islands themselves. A single-seat variant, the IA 58C Pucará “Charlie”, was developed in 1985 with a 30mm DEFA cannon and air-to-surface missiles, though it was cancelled after the prototype flew. A further development, the IA 66 Pucará II (1980), tested Garrett TPE331 turboprops on a converted IA-58A airframe.
The FMA IA 63 Pampa: Into the Jet Trainer Era
Developed in collaboration with Dornier of West Germany, the IA 63 Pampa first flew in 1984 and entered service with the Argentine Air Force as its primary advanced jet trainer. A total of 32 aircraft were built in the initial series. The type has since evolved through the Pampa II-40 (re-engined, 2009) and the Pampa III Block I (2018), the latter featuring a full glass cockpit and updated avionics, with six delivered and further orders placed.
The Lockheed Martin Chapter: A Pivotal Partnership
In 1995, as part of Argentina's broader privatisation programme, FMA was transferred to the private sector and rebranded as Lockheed Martin Aircraft Argentina S.A. — a subsidiary of the American aerospace giant. This chapter, lasting until renationalisation in 2009, produced some of the most technically significant work in the factory's history.
The A-4AR Fightinghawk Programme
The centrepiece of the Lockheed Martin era was the A-4AR Fightinghawk — a comprehensive modernisation of the Argentine Air Force's ageing Douglas A-4 Skyhawk fleet. Under the programme:
- 18 aircraft were modernised at the Córdoba factory by Lockheed Martin Aircraft Argentina S.A.
- A further 18 aircraft were modernised by Lockheed Martin at its facility in Pasadena, California, bringing the total to 36 Fightinghawks.
- The upgrade included a new APG-66 radar (derived from the F-16's system), a modern glass cockpit, HOTAS controls, and compatibility with a wide range of precision-guided munitions.
- The result was an aircraft that, while externally similar to the original Skyhawk, was transformed into a genuinely fourth-generation capable platform — a remarkable achievement for a factory in Córdoba.
The A-4AR programme demonstrated that the Córdoba facility, under Lockheed Martin management, could execute complex avionics integration and structural modification work to international standards — a legacy that informed FAdeA's subsequent MRO capabilities.
C-130 Hercules and T-34 Mentor Modernisations
Beyond the Fightinghawk, the Lockheed Martin era also saw the factory undertake:
- Lockheed C-130 Hercules modernisation (2006) — upgrade work for both the Argentine Air Force and the Colombian Air Force, extending the service life and capability of these transport workhorses.
- Beechcraft T-34 Mentor modernisation (2003) — upgrade programmes for the Argentine Air Force and the Bolivian Air Force, keeping the classic piston trainer relevant for a new generation of student pilots.
These programmes established Córdoba as a regional MRO hub with credibility beyond Argentina's borders — a strategic asset that the renationalised FAdeA would inherit and build upon.
Renationalisation and the FAdeA Era (2009–Present)
In 2009, the Argentine state renationalised the factory and rebranded it as Fábrica Argentina de Aviones «Brigadier San Martín» S.A. — FAdeA. Under state ownership, the factory has pursued new indigenous projects alongside continued MRO work:
- IA-100 (2014) — a new indigenous basic trainer, demonstrating continued Argentine design capability.
- IA-100b “Malvina” (2022) — an evolved variant of the IA-100.
- IA 63 Pampa III Block I (2018) — six delivered, with further orders from the Argentine Air Force.
